Faculties

There are 16 faculties providing degree level education in an active manner within Marmara University. In the faculties there are 97 daytime programmes and 30 evening programmes, making a total of 127 departments/programmes which provide education. The Atatürk Education Faculty is the faculty with the most educational programmes in the university with 30 daytime and 30 evening programmes. While the Dentistry Faculty, Pharmacy and Medical faculties consist of one programme, the Law Faculty has two programmes and the Theology Faculty has four programmes.

Ataturk Faculty of Education

One of the oldest schools in Turkey the roots of the Atatürk Education Faculty date back to 1848 to the Dârülmuallimîn-i Rüşdî. This institute was active under different names throughout history and in 1982 became known as the Atatürk Education Faculty and was affiliated with Marmara University. Pre-school teachers, primary and secondary teachers are trained in the faculty and there is also a Pre School Implementation Unit. The language of education is Turkish in the faculty, while in the Foreign Language Education Department the language of instruction is the relevant language. In the faculty there are 9 different departments with 22 programmes carrying out training and education.

Faculty of Dentistry

In 1962 the school was established as the Istanbul Private Dentistry School, and in 1982 became one of the faculties of Marmara University. There are two departments in the faculty, the Dental Clinic Sciences and Basic Dental Health Sciences. The language of instruction in the faculty is English. 

Faculty of Pharmacy

The school, established in 1963 as the Istanbul Private Pharmacy School, became one of the faculties of Marmara University in 1982. There are 3 departments: a Pharmacy Vocational Sciences department, a Pharmacy Vocational Sciences department and a Pharmacy Technology and Basic Pharmacy Sciences department. The language of instruction in the faculty is Turkish.

On the whole, the language of instruction in the Science-Literature Faculty, established in 1982, is Turkish; however, the relevant foreign languages are the language of instruction in the Sociology Department (English) and the German Language and Literature Department, the French Translator-Interpreter Department, the English Translator-Interpreter Department and the German Translator-Interpreter department. The language of instruction in the Physics and Chemistry Departments is at least 30% English. There are 15 active departments in the Faculty.

The historical past of the Economics Faculty stretches back to the Hamidiye Ticaret Mekteb-i Alisi, an doperated under different names in both the Ottoman and the Republican era. In 1982 the faculty was affiliated with Marmara University as the Economics and Administrative Sciences Faculty. In 2012 the Economics and Administrative Sciences Faculty was divided into three different faculties, and the Economic Faculty included 5 departments, with 9 programmes in Turkish and English, carrying out its education-training activities at the Göztepe Campus.

The school, instituted as the Higher Islamic Institute in 1959, became one of the faculties that formed Marmara University in 1982. In the faculty, in which the language of instruction is Turkish, there are four departments, including Philosophy and Religious Sciences, Primary School Religious Culture and Moral Sciences Teaching, Islamic History and Arts and Basic Islamic Sciences.

The faculty, established in 1948 as the Istanbul Journalists School, was affiliated with Marmara University in 1982 as the Press-Publishing High School; in 1992 it became known as the Communications Department. The faculty contains 3 departments, Journalism, Public Relations and Promotion, Radio, Television and Cinema, in which the language of instruction is Turkish.

The Political Science and International Relations Department, which is part of the faculty and the Public Administration Department, in which the language of instruction is French are both departments with a long past, dating back 30 years. In a decision that was accepted by the Higher Education Council on 03 Mayıs 2012 the aforementioned departments had other departments in which the language of education would be Turkish, making a total of four departments.

The Medical Faculty, the history of which stretches back to 1894 and the Mekteb-i Tıbbiye-i Şâhâne, continued to operate under different names; in 1983 it joined Marmara University under its present name. The language of instruction in the faculty is English, and there are 3 departments, Surgical Medical Sciences, Internal Medical Sciences and Basic Medical Sciences.
