2nd Internationale Contemporary Turkish Alphabets Symposium Was Held

The programme was held in the Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan Culture Center. The opening speeches of the programme were respectively made by the Director of Institute of Turkic Studies Prof. Dr. Okan Yeşilot, Mayor of Sultanbeyli Hüseyin Keskin,  President of Turkish Language Society Prof. Dr. Gürer Gülsevin,  President of Turkish Lnaguage and Letter Association Ekrem Erdem, District Governor of Sultanbeyli Metin Kubilay and Rector of Marmara University Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar.

Özvar said his speech that he has the pleasure of  hosting  this event and is hopeful on the behalf of the Turkish world.  Saying that he is proud of Marmara University’s name, Özvar stated “We are together with the great intellectuals and scientists from almost everywhere of Turkish World for this meeting. I would like to take this occasion to thank all of them”. He continued to his speech by saying "This symposium is attended by invaluable scientists both from our universtiy and Turkish world. They are coming from Russia, Kazakhistan, United States, Uzbekistan, Tatarstan, Kirghizstan and Azerbaijan. Science comes into  existence only with the socialization. This symposium is one of the important occasion that contributes to development of the science and socialization of the scientists. So, I congratulated all academicians and  scientists  participating from Turkish world from now. I believe that our symposium lasting for two days will contribute to Turkish culture, Turkish customs and traditions and Turkish scientific understanding. I want to announce that, therefore, these meeting related to Contemporary  Turkish alphabets will continue in the coming years.  This initiative is one of most important claims of Turkish world and we wished continued cultural Turkish heritage through this symposium. 

Director of Institute of Turkic Studies of Marmara University Prof.Dr. Okan Yeşilyurt said “ There has been a lot of changes since “1st Internationale Contemporary Turkish Alphabets Symposium” that was held  in the process of dissolution of the Soviet Unions in 1991  and in which was offered a proposal of Turkish Alphabets consisting of 34 letters. Yeşilot added that the transition process of Kazakhistan to the Latin alphabets between 2018-2025 and the studies carried out  in the other Turkish states and communities are the most important motivations for us to held such symposium. We reached all teachers who had participated in the symposium held in 1991 and live in the present, and invited them for this symposium.  We, as an  institute interesting with the Turkish world,   carry out a lot of studies. And we continued this studies through a series of symposiums and conferences.  Today, our study includes very important subject headings.  We are very glad to have invaluable teachers as our guests  that we deemed them as seniors and so we can draw a road map and prepare final declaration and recommandation in this field.”

Head of Turkish Language Society Gürer Gülsevin said “Although a common alphabet for Turkey and Turkish states was putting into words  in those years, this project was taken as very important and a primary issue by politicians, scientists and intellectuals following the dissolution of the Soviet Unions.  In those process,  a compherensive and systematical study was held in 1992 hosted by Marmara University. Later, another meeting was also held in Ankara in which all decisions taken by Marmara University were evaluated and approved consequently”.

 The symposium was held in the Conference Halls of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Faculty of Engineering  in eight session in which 31 papers were  presented.
