Disability in the Media: Not Paradigmatic but Equal Language Panel

Opening speeches were delivered by Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Communication Lecturer Yalçın Lüleci PhD and the Disabled Students Unit Coordinator Lectrurer Zuhal Pek PhD. Moderator of the panel was  Faculty of Communication Instructor Assoc. Prof. Ebru Özgen PhD . Alper Şentürk from Community Volunteers Foundation said that thinking and acting with assumptions in behalf of disabled people could cause communication problems and lead to the development of prejudices.

The other speaker of the panel ,the journalist Nilay Vardar pointed out the elements that should be considered in the news about the disabled individuals after saying the disabled people in the current reports were reflected as either victims or heroes and that they were misleading and that  was the result of misrecognition. Çağrı Artan, Istanbul Technical University Coordinator and Gülsüm Şenocak, a Psychologist at the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Disability Directorate, shared their observations and findings with references by mentioning the wrong attitudes they faced due to misleading messages given in the media.

After the Panel ,with the the ideas and comments of journalism students, problematic news was examined and scrutinized in company with Zuhal Pek, Gülsüm Şenocak and Çağrı Artan under the charmanship of Nilay Vardar and Marmara University Journalism Department senior student Büşra Tın. Future journalists  were informed about the care they needed to show in the process of writing these news.
