Symposium on “Rights Mechanisms in Disability Law”

In the symposium, the rights of people with disabilities, problems and solutions were discussed within the framework of national and international legislation.

In the symposium,  beginning with the opening speech of  Assoc.Prof. İpek Sağlam of the Faculty of Law, Family Work and Social Services Istanbul Provincial Deputy Director Halis Kuralay, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Professor Sebahat Deniz, Dean of Atatürk Faculty of Education Professor Ahmet Şükrü Özdemir, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Assoc.Prof. Nagihan Gülsoy, Coordinator of the Disabled Students Unit Lecturer Zuhal Pek made their speeches.  

In the symposium held within the scope of Scientific Research Projects, the rights and problems of disabled people within the public law were addressed. Marmara University Faculty Member  Professor Turan Yildirim and Marmara University administrative staff Muhammet Dalak  expressed the problems experienced by visually impaired people in entering higher education. Marmara University Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Tolga Sirin talked about "Access to Justice for and Representation of the People with Mental Disabilities in the Decisions of the European Court of Human Rights".

In the session on the private law of the subject, Marmara University Faculty Member Hanife Doğrusöz Koşut gave information about “Disability in Terms of the Ability to Execute Negotiable Instrument”. Lecturer  Dr. Canan Ünal talked about  “Discrimination on the Basis of Disability in Labor Law”. Lecrurer Dr. Mehmet Halis Karaman informed the participants about “Effect of Disability on the Rights to Old Age Pension”.

In the session where rights mechanisms were discussed, Rapporteur of  Constitutional Court Judge Fatma Karaman Odabaşı gave information about "Disability Rights in the Light of the Constitutional Court Decisions". Lecturer Dr. Zafer İçer touched upon the subject of  "Protection of Disabled People In Terms of Criminal Law". Istanbul Bilgi University’s  Lecturer Dr.  Ulaş Karan dealed with the  "Avaliable Rights Remedies Towards Disabled People in Turkey in the Context of the Principle of  Equality and Right to Access Justice”.   

In the last session, the problems of disabled individuals and NGOs were determined and the President of the Symposium Assoc. Prof. İpek Sağlam and her assistants Research Assistant Kardelen Kıraç and graduate students of the Faculty of Law  Hüseyin Varol reported problems in order to produce a solution proposal. The reports to be prepared on the problems and solution proposals will be shared with the relevant ministries.

The symposium ended with the speech of Zuhal Pekin, Coordinator of the Disabled Students Unit.
