“Ottoman Women’s Movement” Conference

Before the conference,  ESKAR Director Prof. Gülay Akgül Yılmaz mentioned topics such as there being a fight of rights in the area and places that there is social gender inequality, the fact that this gender inequality towards women created women’s movement during the historical period and that movement began in the last period of Ottoman Empire. Also, Prof. Yılmaz mentioned the importance of creating the mentality that enables opportunities to have equal rights, to benefit from their own rights before the law and in every area and to provide social gender equality in our university and society. Then, Prof. Yılmaz mentioned that the events ESKAR held aim to draw attention on social gender inequalities and to emphasize problems on this issue and in doing so to think on it. Prof.  Yılmaz ended her speech with introduction of Prof. Çakır’s speech.

Prof. Serpil Çakır started her speech with a summary of worldwide progress of women’s movement and its main actors. Mentioning that the women’s movement in Turkey is considered as three important periods Prof. Çakır focused on the first period of the movement in her speech. She continued his speech with important figures such as Halide Edip, Fatma Aliye, and Nuriye Ulviye and their discourse of the Ottoman women’s movement which began in 1870s. Prof. Çakır mentioned that women got right to receive higher education in consequence of campaigns over women associations founded in the Second Constitutional Era and they obtained right to vote and stand for election earlier than many countries. Prof. Çakır also mentioned some woman newspapers and journals such as Şüküfezar, Demet, Mehasin, Süs, Kadınlar Dünyası and Kadınlık Hayatı.After Q&A session, Prof. Çakır was presented plaques. The conference drawing academicians’ and students’ intense attention ended with photo shoot.
