Rector's Message

Dear Marmara University Family,

Marmara University, which began its academic life in 1883 as the Hamidiye School of Commerce, is one of Turkey’s oldest higher education institutions and a bearer of a deep-rooted culture spanning one and a half centuries. With thousands of graduates who have made their mark in various fields both in Turkey and across the world, Marmara University has become  an important part of Turkey's modernization and development story. This success has  been made possible thanks to the determination of our students, the knowledge and experience of our academic staff, and the dedication of our administrative personnel.  Marmara University, with its 20 faculties, 11 institutes, 3 vocational schools, 1 college, and approximately 70,000 students, continues to produce knowledge and value for our country and the world by carrying the legacy it inherited from the past into the future with a spirit of unity and solidarity.

Marmara University is committed to a mission of cultivating individuals who question, research, and create, in addition to imparting professional knowledge and skills. This approach also reflects our university's vision, which is based on scientific research, combines production with innovation, prioritizes social benefit, and focuses on progress. This vision, which flourishes under the umbrella of education and research with our identity as a research university, is further reinforced by education offered in five languages—Turkish, English, French, German, and Arabic—offering students the opportunity to develop themselves in a multicultural academic environment and gain global competitiveness .Thus, the development of individuals who take knowledge beyond the classroom, play an active role in research and social projects, and shape the future through scientific production and international collaborations is encouraged.

Marmara University also takes care to provide a living space that supports the social development of its students. Our campuses, located in different areas of Istanbul, are a concrete reflection of this understanding.  On the Anatolian side, there are the Acıbadem, Anadoluhisarı, Bağlarbaşı, Göztepe, and Kartal campuses; Mehmet Genç Complex in Dragos and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Complex including Maltepe and Sağlık (Health) campuses, as well as the historical Sultanahmet Campus on the European side. This campus network  offers students a variety of development opportunities ranging from cultural, artistic, and sporting activities to social projects, in addition to supporting students' academic work.  This educational environment, shaped by these opportunities and combined with our deep-rooted history, makes Marmara University one of the leading institutions not only of today but also of the future.

Marmara University continues to guide young people who are the professionals of the future, drawing strength from its deep-rooted educational tradition of over 140 years. The brightest reflections of this long journey are our students and graduates who stand out with their achievements in different parts of the world.  These success stories are the result of both individual efforts and the collective knowledge and solidarity of the Marmara University family. This strong bond that brings us together today is also the most important guarantee that  we will continue to take bigger steps in science, culture, and social development in the years ahead.

As the Marmara University family, I warmly greet you with the hope of sharing days when we will turn dreams into reality, take courageous steps toward new beginnings, and build a hopeful future illuminated by the light of knowledge.

With sincere regards,

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emin OKUR
Rector
