Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın Lüleci Commemorated in the “Press History Talks”

Organized by the Marmara University Faculty of Communication, the "Press History Talks" series continued with its third session on June 11, 2025, dedicated to the memory of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın Lüleci, following the sessions held on May 12 and May 21. The session, titled "Commemoration Program for Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın Lüleci", was held in the AZ01 Conference Hall of the Faculty of Communication to honour the esteemed academic, the late Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın Lüleci.

In the opening speech, Rector of Marmara University, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kurt, stated that beyond his professional achievements, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lüleci is remembered for his respect for humanity and sincerity toward his colleagues and students. “There are some people whose value goes far beyond their job descriptions and academic titles. Our dear professor Yalçın was exactly such a person,” said Rector Kurt, emphasizing that Lüleci left behind a strong human legacy.

Dean of the Faculty of Communication, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emin Babacan, highlighted in his speech that the sincere bond Lüleci built with his students and the constructive communication he maintained with his colleagues fostered a deep sense of belonging over the years. “Our professor Yalçın was someone who touched the lives of many and left behind beautiful traces,” said Dean Babacan, adding that the kind words spoken about him reflect the values he left behind.

Prof. Dr. Hediyetullah Aydeniz shared the personal meaning of remembering the friendships and quiet acts of kindness Lüleci left behind: “Professor Yalçın fulfilled his duties, created value, and passed away with dignity. We are gathered here today to witness the values he left behind and thus keep his memory alive.”

Following the opening speeches, academic and administrative staff who had worked with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın Lüleci, along with his students, shared their memories of him. Participants remembered and honored Lüleci by recounting both his academic life and his human qualities.

In the panel session, moderated by Prof. Dr. Hediyetullah Aydeniz, Prof. Dr. Şükrü Sim, Prof. Dr. Alparslan Nas, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yusuf Ziya Gökçek, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Mesut Bostan evaluated Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lüleci’s contributions to media historiography and interdisciplinary communication studies from an academic perspective. The presentations discussed interdisciplinary approaches in media and communication studies within the framework of Lüleci’s work, including the religion-politics-history trilogy, the relationship between art and power, and cinema-centered approaches.

After the program, it was decided that the AZ01 conference hall at the Faculty of Communication would be named after Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın Lüleci.

Who was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın Lüleci?

Born in Bayburt in 1976, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın Lüleci completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown. He graduated from Marmara University, Faculty of Communication, Department of Radio, Television and Cinema in 1998. In 2000–2001, he completed his military service as a reserve officer in the BH Turkish Battalion Task Force Command in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Upon returning to Turkey, Lüleci worked as an editor in various publishing activities. In 2005, he began his master’s degree in the field of Psychology of Religion at Marmara University Institute of Social Sciences and completed it in 2007. In the same year, he began his doctoral studies in Republican History at Istanbul University Institute of Social Sciences and completed them in 2013.

Lüleci started his academic career in 2011 as a lecturer in the Department of Radio, Television and Cinema at Marmara University Faculty of Communication. Between 2017 and 2022, he served as an Assistant Professor, and between 2022 and 2024, he held the title of Associate Professor in the same department.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın Lüleci passed away on June 6, 2024, in Istanbul. He was laid to rest in his birthplace, the village of Yukarı Kızıl in the Aydıntepe district of Bayburt.
