The event titled “Artificial Intelligence in Academic Research: Opportunities, Tools, and Ethical Issues,” organized by the Marmara University Department of Library and Documentation, was held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the Prof. Dr. Orhan Oğuz Library Conference Hall. Bringing together academics, researchers, and students, the program addressed the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence in academic research, the tools currently in use, and the ethical issues accompanying these developments. The opening remarks were delivered by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Ayşin Satan and the Head of the Department of Library and Documentation, Dr. Önder Bayır.
Prof. Dr. Ayşin Satan: “Artificial Intelligence Is Transforming Academic Production”
In her speech, Prof. Dr. Ayşin Satan noted that artificial intelligence is no longer just a subject of research but has become a significant actor transforming the processes of academic production. She noted that the influence of artificial intelligence is increasingly evident in many stages of academic work, including data collection, analysis, literature review, and academic writing.
Prof. Dr. Satan emphasized that while this transformation provides significant convenience for researchers, it also raises ethical concerns related to originality, critical thinking, data security, and algorithmic bias. Stressing that academia cannot remain a passive observer in this process, Vice Rector Satan stated that the principles and boundaries regarding the use of artificial intelligence should be collectively determined by the scientific community.
Dr. Önder Bayır: “Artificial Intelligence Is on the Agenda of Libraries”
Dr. Önder Bayır stated that artificial intelligence has recently become one of the most vital areas of focus for libraries and databases. Explaining that the development of AI-supported search modules within databases offers researchers more sophisticated guidance, Dr. Bayır noted that this shift provides essential opportunities specifically for academic studies.
Underlining that Marmara University hosts a total of 8 libraries, Dr. Önder Bayır shared that they serve academics, researchers, and students with approximately 1 million 70 thousand printed resources, nearly 50 thousand rare works, and around 200 paid and open-access databases. Expressing his satisfaction with the high level of interest in the program, Dr. Bayır thanked the company representatives and participants who supported the organization. Furthermore, as part of the event, the company Online Bilgi made a book donation to the university library.
Throughout the day, sessions led by experts covered topics such as the use of AI in academic research, scientific publishing, ethical principles, writing processes, and auditing. During practical presentations conducted by representatives of Online Bilgi, participants were introduced to solutions for information access, literature discovery, citation analysis, and AI-supported academic tools. At the conclusion of the program, the TEMA Foundation made a tree donation in memory of the event.
