İnas Darülfünunu Exhibition: 100 Years of Women at University

Opening ceremony started with Principal of ESKAR Prof. Gülay Akgül Yılmaz’s featured address. In her speech, underlining the fact that women gained the right to higher education with struggle and long after men did she stated that the exhibition reveals the historical period with documentation and it is important for the new generation in terms of raising awareness. Yılmaz made an evaluation on the gender equality situation as of 2016 at Marmara University comparing the proportion of the number of women academicians at the university with that of in the units that recruit women academicians from the fields of social sciences, science and by competence and also the number of women in administrative staff with the number of female students at the university.

At the end of the evaluation Yılmaz remarked some of the problems and stated that Marmara University is in a good position in terms of gender equality.

Rector of Marmara University Prof. M. Emin Arat emphasised that the Osmanlı Müdafaa-i Hukuk-ı Nisvan Cemiyeti which was established owing to Kadınlar Dünyası Dergisi  (Women’s World Journal) published by Nuriye Ulviye is a milestone in respect to women’s gaining right to higher education. Rector Arat said that the exhibition prompts one to think about how much the gender equality has been achieved today at universities and how much women at universities are involved in the decision-making process.

The exhibition was open to visitors after the plaque ceremony and it can be visited everyday but Monday between 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. on January 12-16 and January 29 - February 12, 2017.
