Cultural Heritage Awareness and Museums Panel

The  panel was moderated by Uğur Genç, the restorer and conservator of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Our academicians  Meral Özomay and  Güssün Güneş and Mahir Ergüven Erkul from the Directorate of Military Museum participated as a speaker.

The first speech of the panel was made by Uğur Genç  under the title “Cultural Heritage and Conservation”. He  said that we should instill the knowledge and love of cultural heritage for our children and added  “This is the most basic way to prevent the destruction of historical artifacts that are faced today .” In addition to showing his improvements works in which he has been taking place  as a conservator and restorer with his team, Genç said that it is necessary to work with expert teams and curators. Uğur Genç ended his speech with the words that museums should go to cooperation in order to provide sustainable protection.

The panel continued with Lecturer Dr. Meral Özomay’s speech on “Methods of Analysis in Conservation and Restoration”.  Özomay talked about the duty of museums within the scope of preservation of cultural heritage awareness and emphasized the importance of three parameters for the protection of historical monuments; “Proper light, proper heat, proper humidity”. Also; he added that museums should approach the exhibition, storage and restoration processes with precision. Meral Özomay stated that it is necessary to examine and evaluate each work on the basis of unique qualities and presented detailed information about the analysis and protection of textile works.

Güssün Güneş, with her speech on “ Marmara University Republic Museum and Collections” gave information about the establishment of the museum in the Sultanahmet Complex. Giving information also about  the content of the Republic Museum, which hosts many local and foreign art lovers throughout the year, Güneş said it is possible to witness the passing time in the museum.   Saying that they hosted works of valuable artists such as  Aliye Berger,  Abidin Dino,  Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu, Nurullah Berk, Selçuk Demirel, Sabri Berker and Turan Selçuk,  he added that the enlarged dimensions of these works can also be accessed from the digital archive created in the library of our university. Finally, Güssun Güneş talked about İhap Hulusi Görey Collection and Ender Merter, who brought this collection to our university.
